Answering Common Landscape Design Questions

What’s the average project cost?

Our residential landscape design and installation jobs typically range from $10,000-$50,000. We’re also happy to discuss projects outside of this scope, including commercial landscape design, complex builds with extensive hardscaping, and smaller solutions.

Do you provide stand-alone designs?

Yes, we sell landscape designs! If you want to do the installation, one of our talented designers will meet you on-site to discuss your needs and vision. We’ll create a concept design first and follow with a master plan and guidance. Concept design costs start at $750 and vary based on scope.

What is the difference between a concept plan and a master plan?

A concept plan is the beginning stage in a design. We implement a grading and drainage plan, layout where the hardscapes will be, and design the garden beds without choosing specific plants. A master plan is an evolved and complete concept plan. A full planting plan encompasses all aspects of the master design and is implemented from it.

What Portland areas do you serve?

We primarily work in the inner Portland-metro area, NE and SE Portland neighborhoods, to maintain a low carbon footprint with short commutes and because most of our work comes from referrals. However, we’re open to projects in other areas of Portland.

Do we install other designer’s plans?

Although we most love to implement our own unique landscape designs, we will bring another company’s designs to life. We understand that situations arise in which you may need a reputable team to provide hardscaping, problem-solving, and installation. Please contact us to discuss further.

Do you only use native plants?

We are fortunate to live in a climate where a large variety of things grow. Therefore, we choose our plant pallet based on the environment and the landscape; sometimes using only natives doesn’t work. Although our designs are native-focused, we also use non-native, drought-tolerant plants. Our planting plans are designed to create habitat while meeting your personal aesthetic.

Do you offer maintenance services?

We offer fine gardening services to our design and installation clients, which is pruning, weeding and delicate handwork. Our knowledgeable gardeners will keep your landscape looking its finest and continue to educate you on best practices.

Who are your favorite vendors for plants and materials?

For seasonal materials like mulch and compost, we support Wood Waste Management in Portland. Our favorite nurseries are Naomi’s Organic Farm Supply, Thicket, Garden Fever, and Xera Plants. For specific recommendations, please ask!

Do you use subcontractors?

The Habitat Gardens crew specializes in many aspects of landscaping including hardscaping and irrigation. When a project falls outside of our scope however, we partner with trusted subcontractors. Subcontractors may assist us on your project with concrete work, covered structures, and pergolas.
